At least 30 army troops have died from dehydration as they were cut off from water supplies in the abandoned Elephant Pass base. LTTE rebels still hold portions of the A-9 highway, preventing water and supplies from reaching retreating troops from the south. The continued defeats at the hands of the LTTE have brought calls for military reforms and requests for weapons and advisors from neighboring nations like India or Pakistan.
