On October 8 the Burundian government claimed that 80 National Liberation Forces (FNL) rebels were killed in a series of firefights in the heavily-forested Tenga-Kivoga area north of Bujumbura. The fighting took place over a two day period. 10 government soldiers died. On October 11 the Burundian Army said that its artillery units north of Bujumbura shelled "infiltration corridors" in Tenga-Kivoga. The operation appeared to have continued through October 13, when the Burundian Army claimed its troops killed another 70 rebels around Tenga-Kivoga. On October 17 ethnic Hutu rebels struck back in Kinama, in an attack that killed two civilians.
