AFP reported the Madagascan Army was on the verge of collapse. The report quote an unnamed Madagascan general as saying soldiers were disobeying orders and the army is breaking up... The report cited the violence in Fianarantsoa Province (which included a convoy ambush) as the most worrisome series of events, which pitted soldiers supporting Ravalomanana against a contingent supporting Ratsiraka. The Madagascan Army (really a large internal security force) has, on paper, approximately 25,000 troops and military police. Only 2,000 troops, however, are regarded as regulars.
