The maritime border between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait has never been defined. As negotiations continued without result, the Iranians moved into the disputed area claimed by both countries last February and began offshore drilling. After months of protests by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, Iran announced on 13 May that it would suspend drilling in the disputed zone (which is nowhere near the Iranian coast). --Stephen V Cole
