India-Pakistan: September 7, 2003

Archives

Prime Minister Sharon of Israel made the first visit by an Israeli leader to India, and brought a trade delegation with him. Much to Pakistan's consternation, India and Israel have become increasingly close allies over the past decade. Israel is providing India with advanced military technology, better stuff than Pakistan can buy from Russia or China. In particular, India is getting three Israeli designed and built Phalcon AWACS aircraft (for a billion dollars), which will increase India's existing edge in the air. But the US is blocking Israel from selling India Arrow anti-missile systems. The US is afraid that this would drive Pakistan to do something more dangerous, like a pre-emptive strike or providing Islamic terrorists with nukes. The US has veto power over foreign sales of Arrow because the US provided half the money for its development.
