January 15, 2006: FARC is falling apart and running out of options. The success of the government anti-crime program have caused FARC to come apart, as various factions differ on how to deal with the crises. The smaller ELN is having similar problems. At the moment, it appears that both leftist movements will, after a few years, dissolve into many smaller, independent criminal gangs, with a faint political afterglow.

January 13, 2006: Troops clashed with the ELN on the Ecuadorian border, leaving six rebels dead.

January 12, 2006: Venezuela has agreed to cooperate in fighting smuggling along the border. This includes stopping the movement of weapons and stolen cars across the frontier.

January 8, 2006: On the Pacific coast, the army sized FARC ammo supplies, including 2.5 tons of explosives and 11,000 rounds of rifle ammo.
