Greece claimed that it had arrested a key member of November 17, the left-wing terrorist gang involved in over 50 bombings and accused of 23 murders, including former CIA Athens chief of station, Richard Welch. (Welch as slain in 1975.) In fact, this would be the first arrest of a known November 17 member. The suspect was identified as Savvas Xiros. He was arrested in Athens. Xiros was arrested after an arms cache was discovered in a building he rented. The building was in the Kato Patissia section of Athens. November 17 is named after a student-led revolt against the Greek colonels regime which began on November 17, 1973.
