Angola said that new elections will be held in the latter half of 2002. Elections were originally scheduled for 2001. The Angolan government also claimed that its troops had killed 30 UNITA rebels in a series of firefights near the city of Benguela. The government spokesman said Angolan Army troops were conducting an operation to drive UNITA out of positions south of Benguela. In Another report (December 28), the government said that Jose Bumba, leader of the Cabinda Enclave Liberation Front -Renewed (FLEC-R) had surrendered. Bumba had fought the Angolan government (MPLA) for nearly 25 years. At one time the FLEC had carved out a "liberated zone" in northern Cabinda (Burraco). Bumba was apparently surrendering under the amnesty program offered by the government in November (November 10). The amnesty was part of the "celebration" of Angola's 25 years of freedom from Portugal.
