February 27, 2008: A French firm has been hired to upgrade two German built Type 209 Ecuadorian subs. The work will be done in a Chilean shipyard. The $15 million job involves replacing German equipment with French combat control systems and sonar and Italian torpedo tubes. A second contract will involve cutting the subs in half so that the diesel engines can be replaced.
