The airfield in northern Iraq that was used to fly in armored vehicles from US bases in Germany, is showing signs of damage. About a hundred armored vehicles were flown in for the advance on Mosul and Kirkuk. The C-17s landing with M-1 tanks hit the runway weighing about 150 tons. Between March 27th and April 14th, 220 C-130s and C-17s landed with 6500 tons of cargo. After all this traffic, cracks appeared in parts of the runway. So 2,000 feet of the 7,000 foot runway were closed off. The remaining 5,000 feet was sufficient for C-130s and C-17s landing and taking off.
